Question: Why does the electron transport chain need oxygen? Answer: Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor. Without it, electrons back up, the proton gradient collapses, and ATP production stops. This is why aerobic respiration yields far more ATP than fermentation, which can't use the chain at all.
